Duke @ Virginia Tech Recap
Virginia Tech rolled to a 45-0 dual meet win over Duke on Feb. 9, 2024 in Northwood, Saltville, VA. The Hokies piled up bonus points across multiple weight classes, turning a competitive slate into a one-sided final score.
A string of technical falls provided the decisive edge. Sam Latona’s 18-3 technical fall at 133 pounds and Mekhi Lewis’ 17-2 technical fall at 174 pounds were two of the more emphatic results that swung the scoring heavily in Virginia Tech’s favor. Hunter Catka sealed the rout at heavyweight with a 17-2 technical fall, and those bonus-point victories added up quickly.
Cooper Flynn also contributed a key margin of victory at 125 pounds, taking a 16-4 major decision and delivering four team points. That, combined with the multiple technical falls, left Duke unable to find a foothold as the Hokies accumulated the extra points that decide dual meets.
The sweep of bonus-point wins was the clear turning point; Virginia Tech’s ability to convert matches into majors and technical falls produced the 45-0 shutout. With dominant finishes across the lineup, the Hokies left Saltville with a comprehensive conference victory and no points conceded to Duke.
