Bonus-point onslaught sends No. 7 Virginia Tech past Virginia, 32-7

Two early technical falls and a string of major decisions powered Virginia Tech’s road win in the Commonwealth Clash, while an upset at 149 kept Virginia within reach briefly.

Virginia Tech left Charlottesville with a 32-7 victory over Virginia after turning the dual into a bonus-point race the Cavaliers could not match. The Hokies piled up tech falls and major decisions early and often, building a cushion that dictated the night.

No. 2 Eddie Ventresca set the tone in the opening bout, finishing a 20-5 technical fall at 125 to put Tech ahead immediately. The momentum continued when No. 6 Aaron Seidel closed his 133-pound match by tech fall, 15-0, pushing the visitors into a commanding position and forcing Virginia to respond with bonus of its own.

Virginia did answer at 141 when Gable Porter earned a 12-3 major decision, and the Cavaliers followed with a narrow 3-2 win from Wynton Denkins at 149 — an upset over No. 4 Collin Gaj that flashed briefly as a potential turning point. That late upset reduced the gap but ultimately did not flip control of the dual.

Virginia Tech reasserted itself through sustained bonus scoring in the middle and late weights. The Hokies won a string of major decisions capped by No. 17 Jimmy Mullen’s 14-6 major at 285, and collected multiple other major wins and the two techs that had opened the night. Tech finished having taken eight of 10 bouts, the bonus-point work producing the decisive separation on the team scoreboard.

Beyond the score, the result carried the Commonwealth Clash framing: the matchup is part of that rivalry series and Tech’s win reinforced its standing in the season. For Virginia the night included individual bright spots — Porter’s major among them — but the Cavaliers could not find the bonus answers necessary to chase down Tech’s early surge.

The win extended Virginia Tech’s recent run in the series and left the Hokies in control of the dual; Virginia was competitive in a handful of matches but the Hokies’ bonus accumulation proved the defining element.
