Appalachian State @ VMI Recap

Appalachian State beat Virginia Military Institute 40-6 in Lexington, Va., on Dec. 13, 2024, in a one-sided SoCon dual at Virginia Military Institute. The margin was built almost entirely on bonus-point wins as Appalachian State finished with multiple tech falls and pins that made a comeback unlikely for VMI.

What decided the dual was a sustained run of bonus basketball-style scoring from Appalachian State. The Mountaineers collected six bonus-point victories across the card, mixing technical falls and falls that turned close bouts into insurmountable leads. That burst of bonus offense created the clear turning point, turning what could have been a competitive meet into a rout.

A few bouts stand out. At 125 pounds Bryson Terrell put together a dominant technical fall, winning 17-2 and earning five team points. In the middle weights Jeremiah Price secured a fall, delivering six team points and sealing the outcome with a pin. At heavyweight Stephan Monchery closed the dual with another fall, adding six more team points and underscoring Appalachian State’s control up and down the lineup. Those bonus wins, along with other decisive results, accounted for the lion’s share of App State’s scoring.

Appalachian State’s 34-point victory margin reflected both depth and the ability to finish matches. VMI managed a handful of decisions to reach six team points, but the string of Appalachian State tech falls and pins was the difference on the scoreboard in Lexington.
