Iowa State defeats Northern Iowa 28-6 in Ames

No. 4 Iowa State took eight of 10 matches and three bonus-point victories, including a technical fall by No. 1 Yonger Bastida, to beat No. 15 Northern Iowa at Hilton Coliseum.

AMES, Iowa — No. 4 Iowa State defeated No. 15 Northern Iowa 28-6 at Hilton Coliseum on Feb. 15, 2026.

Iowa State opened the dual with five straight wins to build an early lead and ultimately won eight of the 10 matches. The Cyclones recorded three bonus-point victories — a technical fall, a pair of major decisions — that helped produce the 28-6 final score.

Stevo Poulin started the scoring at 125 pounds, using a Period 2 reversal and a riding-time point among his scoring entries to beat Trever Anderson 4-1. Garrett Grice followed with a 5-4 decision at 133, holding off No. 17 Julian Farber after a first-period, three-point takedown and a late reversal extended his edge.

No. 4 Anthony Echemendia provided the biggest early margin, rolling to a 19-10 major decision over No. 26 Max Brady at 141 with multiple three-point takedowns through the first two periods. Jacob Frost, listed No. 8 at 149, closed with a third-period three-point takedown and a riding-time point to win 8-2. No. 8 Vinny Zerban added a 15-5 major decision at 157 to complete Iowa State’s five-match run.

Northern Iowa’s two victories came in the middle weights. Ryder Downey, ranked No. 6 at 165, pushed Connor Euton to overtime and secured the Panthers’ first point of the night with a three-point sudden‑victory takedown for an 8-5 decision. Later, at 184, Northern Iowa’s Nick Fox recorded three takedowns and a riding-time point in a 12-5 win over Manny Rojas.

Iowa State finished the dual with a set of high-profile decisions. Rocky Elam, the No. 2-ranked 197-pounder, scored late in the third and added riding time for an 8-1 decision. In heavyweight, No. 1 Yonger Bastida ended his bout by technical fall, reaching a 21-6 margin in the opening period.

The 174-pound bout required overtime as well. No. 12 MJ Gaitan tied the match with late escapes and a second-period takedown, then ended it in sudden victory with an overtime takedown to beat Izzy Moreno 8-5.

The result improved Iowa State’s standing in their reported snapshot and left Northern Iowa with two wins on the night. The dual was contested at Hilton Coliseum in Ames in front of a home crowd.
