George Mason @ Virginia Tech Recap
Virginia Tech Men's Wrestling beat George Mason Men's Wrestling 42-5 in Northwood, Saltville, VA on February 10, 2024. The Hokies built a dominant margin thanks to an avalanche of bonus-point wins that left Mason with just a single victory on the board.
Virginia Tech racked up majors and technical falls across the lineup, converting several matches into extra points. Cooper Flynn posted a 14-3 major decision and Sam Latona followed with an 11-3 major decision, while Tom Crook put together a clinical 15-0 technical fall. Those bonus results pushed Virginia Tech well ahead and kept Mason from mounting a comeback.
George Mason’s lone bright spot was Evan Maag at 165 pounds, who earned an 18-1 technical fall to collect five points and stave off a shutout. That effort was impressive but isolated amid a Hokies squad that kept collecting bonus points at nearly every other weight class.
Virginia Tech closed the dual emphatically when Andy Smith recorded a fall over Nick Foster, the pin adding six team points, and Jimmy Mullen capped scoring with a 21-6 technical fall at heavyweight. Those late bonus victories sealed the 42-5 final and underscored the gap in bonus scoring that decided the dual.
