Arizona State rallies with late bonus spree to down Oregon State, 23-16

Shay Addison’s reversal-to-pin ignited a five-match run; No. 28 Colton Hawks stunned No. 4 Justin Rademacher in sudden victory.

Arizona State closed a 16-4 deficit and scored the final 19 points to claim a 23-16 dual victory over Oregon State in Tempe. The Sun Devils’ comeback hinged on a string of bonus-point results and a pivotal pin that swung momentum late in the dual.

The turning point arrived at 184 pounds when No. 33 Shay Addison executed a reversal into a pin, erasing a multi-point margin and energizing the Desert Financial Arena. That fall was followed by back-to-back bonus performances: No. 20 Pierson Manville delivered an 11-3 major decision at 141 to get ASU on the board, and freshman Ben Szuba closed out the dual with an 11-0 major decision at heavyweight, supplying four team points that helped seal the outcome.

The most consequential result came at 197, where No. 28 Colton Hawks upset No. 4 Justin Rademacher, 6-4, in sudden-victory overtime. Rademacher opened the third period with a late takedown to cut the margin, but Hawks answered in overtime, recording a +1 and then an escape in the second overtime period to finish the decision.

Oregon State had built its advantage early with several victories, including a dominant 12-3 major decision from No. 30 Gabe Whisenhunt at 133 and a medical forfeit at 125 that awarded the Beavers initial points. Those early wins produced a 16-4 lead before Arizona State reeled off five straight wins from the 165-pound class through heavyweight to complete the comeback.

Despite Gabe Whisenhunt’s big win and other early contributions, Oregon State could not withstand ASU’s late run of bonus scores and the sudden-victory upset at 197. The 23-16 final reflected how impactful bonus points and a single late match swing can be in a dual meet.
