Clarion defeats Ohio, 25-16, in dual at Clarion University
Clarion collected two major decisions, a technical fall and a pin plus timely decisions to top Ohio in a Feb. 15 dual in Clarion, Pa.
CLARION, Pa., Feb. 15 — Clarion defeated Ohio, 25-16, in a completed dual meet at Clarion University.
Clarion won six bouts while Ohio took five. Clarion’s bonus-point results — two major decisions, a technical fall and a fall — combined with decisions at 149 and 285 pounds to produce the nine-point margin.
Travis Clawson opened the meet for Clarion with a 10-0 major decision at 125 pounds. Clawson opened with a three-point takedown, added an escape and another takedown and closed the scoring with one-point entries and a riding-time point to finish the major decision.
No. 33 Joey Fischer extended Clarion’s advantage at 133 with a 13-5 major decision over Ryan Meek. Fischer scored takedowns in the match and recorded a riding-time point; a third-period takedown helped seal the margin.
Scott Johnson ended the 141-pound bout by technical fall, 18-2, after near-fall sequences and second-period takedowns pushed the score to the technical-fall threshold.
Oliver Fairchild rallied from a 6-3 halftime deficit to beat Paul Woo, 7-6, at 149. Fairchild escaped in the second period and recorded a takedown with 26 seconds remaining to take the lead.
Alejandro Herrera-Rondon produced Clarion’s pin at 165, recording takedowns in the first and second periods before the match ended by fall with a recorded point total of 6-0.
John Meyers closed the lineup for Clarion with a 5-0 decision at 285, escaping in the second, adding a third-period takedown and earning a riding-time point late in the third.
Ohio’s lineup included several ranked winners who kept the dual close. No. 23 Garrett Thompson won by technical fall, 15-0, at 174 after an early sequence of takedown and near-falls and second-period scoring that produced the match-ending margin.
No. 33 Derek Raike earned a 13-4 major decision at 157, and No. 25 Zayne Lehman posted a 13-0 major decision at 197 with second-period scoring and a third-period takedown plus riding time to finish. No. 19 Sal Perrine provided a late swing at 184, recording a third-period reversal, a three-point takedown and a riding-time point in a 6-2 decision.
Clarion’s collection of bonus wins and timely decisions supplied the bulk of the team total, while Ohio’s technical falls and major decisions narrowed the gap through the later weights. The dual is recorded as completed in the event log for Feb. 15 at Clarion University.
