Minnesota tops Wisconsin 26-10
The Gophers turned a competitive dual into a comfortable win with a stretch of four consecutive bonus results in the middle weights.
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota topped Wisconsin 26-10 on Jan. 25 at the Bierman Field Athletic Building.
The turning point came in the middle weights, when Minnesota produced four consecutive bonus results. No. 9 Vance VomBaur won a 10-1 major decision at 141, No. 19 Charlie Millard followed with a 15-4 major at 157, No. 15 Andrew Sparks posted an 11-1 major at 165, and No. 4 Max McEnelly closed the run with a 21-6 technical fall at 184. Those bonus outcomes accounted for the bulk of Minnesota’s team scoring and opened the margin the Gophers needed.
Earlier in the dual, Jore Volk provided an early boost at 125 with a 4-1 decision in overtime. Volk, ranked No. 6 at 125, recorded a takedown in the first overtime to break a 1-1 tie and secure the decision.
Wisconsin had moments of its own. No. 10 Zan Fugitt delivered a 15-3 major at 133 to give the Badgers a brief lead, and Joseph Zargo, ranked No. 13 at 149, beat Drew Roberts 4-1. At heavyweight Braxton Amos picked up a 2-0 decision over No. 8 Koy Hopke, an outcome flagged in the bout record as an upset.
The result left Minnesota, listed as No. 7 in team context for the weekend, with the 16-point margin. Wisconsin was shown as No. 26 in the same team context. Minnesota’s sequence of majors and a technical fall produced the decisive swing; Wisconsin’s individual wins were not enough to overcome the concentrated bonus-point stretch.
