California Baptist @ Utah Valley Recap

California Baptist edged Utah Valley 20-17 in a tight Big 12 dual at Utah Valley University in Riverside, Calif. on Feb. 24, 2024. The win came down to bonus-point production, with California Baptist collecting three bonus victories that produced a margin the Wolverines could not overcome.

Elijah Griffin’s 10-1 major decision at 125 delivered four team points, and Nathan Haas followed with a 20-6 major at 184 for another four. The decisive blow was Hunter Leake’s pin at 133, a six-point swing that pushed California Baptist’s bonus total to 14 team points and proved to be the difference in the final math. Those three bonus outcomes were the primary reason the Lancers finished ahead in a tightly contested meet.

Utah Valley’s biggest response came at 197, where Evan Bockman earned a 17-2 technical fall to claim five points and keep the Wolverines within striking distance. Despite that effort, Utah Valley could not find another bonus to erase California Baptist’s advantage. In the end the Lancers’ accumulation of majors and a fall decided the dual, with Utah Valley falling short by three team points.
