Iowa State @ Oklahoma Recap
Iowa State cruised to a 37-4 victory over Oklahoma in Norman, OK on January 26, 2024, using a barrage of bonus-point finishes to build an insurmountable lead. The Cyclones collected multiple majors, technical falls and a pin to turn what might have been a close dual into a lop-sided final score.
A run of bonus wins was the difference. Anthony Echemendia’s 23-7 technical fall at 141 and David Carr’s 21-3 technical fall at 165 each awarded Iowa State five team points and took the steam out of Oklahoma’s lineup. MJ Gaitan’s fall at 174 was the single most decisive moment; the pin delivered six team points and effectively ended any realistic comeback hopes for the host team.
Oklahoma’s lone victory came at 197, where Stephen Buchanan downed Caleb Helgeson 18-5 by major decision for four points that prevented a shutout. Still, that result was an outlier in a dual otherwise dominated by Iowa State’s ability to score bonus points across the board.
Beyond the technical falls and the pin, Iowa State also notched several major decisions that padded the margin and showcased depth across multiple weights. The Cyclones’ mix of high-scoring tech falls and a timely fall left Oklahoma with too much ground to make up, ending the night with a convincing 33-point road loss.
