George Mason awarded dual win over Central Michigan on fourth tiebreaker after 18-18 tie

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. — George Mason was awarded the dual-meet victory over Central Michigan on the fourth tiebreaker after the teams finished 18-18, with the Patriots earning the extra team point for most near-fall points, 13-8.

Ben Monn opened the scoring for George Mason with an 8-3 decision at 125 pounds. Central Michigan answered when Andrew Austin recorded a technical fall, 20-5, at 133, and Tate Hisey put George Mason back ahead with a 10-2 major decision at 141.

Central Michigan then won three consecutive matches to take control. Jimmy Nugent rallied from a 5-2 deficit to beat No. 19 Kaden Cassidy, 7-5, scoring an escape, a one-point scoring entry and a 3-point takedown in the third period, according to bout transcript entries. Mason Shrader, listed at No. 25, followed with a 4-2 decision over No. 22 DJ McGee after tying the match with an escape at the 36-second mark of the third period and adding a 3-point takedown later in the period. Chandler Amaker added a 7-3 decision at 165 to put the Chippewas ahead 14-7.

George Mason responded with three straight wins to retake the lead. Logan Messer recorded an 11-1 major decision at 174. Malachi DuVall, listed at No. 26, won 1-0 at 184 on a third-period escape recorded at the 18-second clock entry. Jack Kelly delivered a 17-5 major decision at 197 to put the Patriots in front going into the heavyweight bout.

Central Michigan’s Bryan Caves then posted a 15-2 major decision at 285 that tied the dual at 18-18 and forced application of the tiebreaker criteria. Meet officials applied the fourth tiebreaker — most near-fall points — and awarded the extra team point to George Mason, giving the Patriots the meet win on the tiebreaker.
