Buffalo @ Cornell Recap
Cornell handed Buffalo a 37-0 shutout at the Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, N.Y., on Nov. 23, 2024, dominating the dual with a steady stream of bonus-point victories. The Big Red’s offense was powered by several decisive wins that prevented Buffalo from finding any foothold and turned individual bouts into team momentum.
Greg Diakomihalis picked up a 14-2 major decision at 125 pounds, and Brett Ungar ran away with a 15-0 technical fall at 133 to deliver five bonus points. Simon Ruiz added another tech fall, finishing 20-4 at 174, while Michael Dellagatta and Josh Saunders each earned major decisions at 197 (11-1) and 141 (11-2). Those five bonus wins were the difference-makers, supplying the bulk of Cornell’s scoring and keeping Buffalo off the scoreboard for the night.
The clear turning point was Cornell’s accumulation of bonus points across multiple weight classes; the five bonus victories alone accounted for 22 team points, creating an insurmountable gap that forced Buffalo into desperate match strategy late in the dual. Cornell’s depth and ability to convert tight matches into majors and techs carried them to a comprehensive win, while Buffalo was unable to respond with bonus scoring of its own.
