VMI tops Campbell 32-16 at Virginia Military Institute
Keydets built an early lead with a technical fall, forfeits and a pin; Campbell answered with two technical falls late but could not erase the deficit.
LEXINGTON, Va. — VMI defeated Campbell 32-16 on Feb. 13 at Virginia Military Institute, taking an early lead with bonus-point results and holding on as Campbell rallied in the upper weights.
VMI opened the dual with a technical fall at 149 pounds by Phoenix Alyea and collected two forfeits that pushed the Keydets ahead before the midway point of the lineup. Beau Lewis followed with a pin at 174 to extend VMI’s advantage and supply maximum team points in the middle of the dual.
Campbell responded in the late matches with two technical falls and a heavyweight decision. Conor Maslanek closed the 197-pound bout by technical fall, 19-4, and Logan Heil recorded a 15-0 technical fall at 133. Sawyer VanRider added a 7-3 decision at heavyweight and Brant Cracraft posted a 10-7 decision at 184 for Campbell’s other points.
VMI’s early bonus scoring and mid-dual fall created a margin Campbell could not erase. The Keydets also scored in the 165-pound slot, where Ryan Vigil defeated Kendrick Hodge to keep the momentum on VMI’s side.
The result gave VMI a conference win at Cormack Hall; both team sites listed the final score as 32-16. The dual featured multiple bonus-point bouts on both sides, with VMI’s early technical fall and forfeits producing the decisive swing and Campbell’s late technicals narrowing but not overcoming the gap.
Individual finishes that determined the dual included Alyea’s 16-0 technical fall at 149, Lewis’ pin at 174 and Maslanek’s 19-4 technical fall at 197. Logan Heil’s 15-0 technical fall at 133 and VanRider’s decision at heavyweight were the most consequential parts of Campbell’s late run.
The teams will resume Southern Conference schedules next week; VMI’s roster page and Campbell’s release each list the bout-level results and the outcome for the dual.
