Purdue 27, Michigan State 9
Two technical falls and a string of bonus-point results turned a close mid-dual into a decisive Purdue victory in West Lafayette.
West Lafayette, Ind. — Purdue defeated Michigan State 27-9 on Jan. 23, pulling away behind four bonus-point outcomes, including technical falls by No. 32 Greyson Clark and No. 4 Joey Blaze.
Michigan State opened the dual with three early wins and led 9-4 through the first four weights. Josh Terrill edged Hayden Filipovich 2-1 at heavyweight and Nick Corday scored a 7-0 sudden-victory decision at 125 after a 3-point takedown and a 4-point nearfall in the first overtime. No. 27 Kael Wisler then upset No. 17 Ben Vanadia, 9-8, with two third-period takedowns that produced the margin despite a riding-time point for Vanadia at the buzzer.
Purdue answered with consecutive bonus results that swung the scoreboard. No. 32 Greyson Clark recorded a 15-0 technical fall at 141 after building an early advantage with a first-period takedown and near-fall sequences and adding a takedown and an escape in the later periods to reach the technical-fall threshold.
No. 4 Joey Blaze later finished his match at 165 by technical fall, 19-3. Blaze produced a large first-period lead, including a 4-point nearfall, and added a takedown in the second period that pushed the margin past the 15-point threshold.
Purdue supplemented those tech falls with major decisions and other bonus outcomes in the middle weights. No. 29 James Rowley posted a 17-4 major decision at 184 and No. 20 Brody Baumann won by major decision, 16-5, at 174. Stoney Buell, ranked No. 21 at 157, contributed a 5-0 decision, and Blake Boarman won 5-0 at 133.
Gavin Brown’s 15-8 decision at 149 added to Purdue’s run of wins in the middle of the lineup. The Boilermakers took the final six bouts on the card to turn a tight mid-dual score into a comfortable team margin.
Michigan State’s early rally — keyed by Terrill, Corday and Wisler — kept the dual competitive through the halfway point, but Purdue’s string of bonus outcomes supplied the decisive swing in team scoring.
Final score: Purdue 27, Michigan State 9.
