Illinois @ Northwestern Recap
Northwestern defeated Illinois 20-20 in Illinois on February 18, 2024, in a dual decided by bonus-point wrestling across the middle weights. The scoreboard finished even, but bonus production and key victories carried Northwestern to the team win.
Illinois piled up major points in several spots. Anthony Madrigal dominated Dedrick Navarro 8-0 at 133 for a major decision, Danny Pucino put Kolby McClain on his back for a fall at 141, and Edmond Ruth turned in a 16-4 major decision at 174. Those three bonus outcomes accounted for a significant chunk of Illinois' team total.
Northwestern answered with its own run of bonus wins that ultimately swung the meet. Sam Cartella’s 12-3 major at 149 and Trevor Chumbley’s 22-6 technical fall at 157 delivered four and five team points respectively, keeping Northwestern level with Illinois. Evan Bates then added another 22-6 technical fall at 197 to push Northwestern’s bonus tally and cement the deadlock on the scoreboard.
The meet came down to those high-impact bouts rather than a string of decisions, with both teams trading majors, technical falls, and a pin. Illinois’ Pucino and Ruth provided huge moments, but Northwestern’s middle- and upper-weight bonus performances from Cartella, Chumbley, and Bates neutralized that advantage and left the dual at a 20-20 finish that Northwestern won.
