Franklin & Marshall edges Sacred Heart 21-16 in Fairfield

A string of bonus-point results in the middle weights — including a technical fall, a pin and a major decision — decided the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association dual.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Franklin & Marshall edged Sacred Heart 21-16 in a dual at Sacred Heart on Jan. 24, 2026.

Franklin & Marshall built a cushion with a 20-5 technical fall from James Garcia at 125 pounds, a result that supplied five team points and began a critical stretch of bonus scores. Moments later No. 30 Bryce Kresho rallied to pin John Hildebrandt at 141, a fall that preserved the momentum for the Diplomats.

Sacred Heart answered in the middle weights when Dakota Asuncion knocked off Pat Phillips 11-3 by major decision at 149, a late takedown and riding-time point securing the margin for the Pioneers. The dual’s decisive swing came at 157 when Josh Hillard delivered a 12-1 major decision for Franklin & Marshall, another four-team points that pushed F&M past the finish line.

The dual featured four F&M bonus wins that together offset Sacred Heart’s tight decisions elsewhere on the card. Franklin & Marshall also got a decision at 165 from Josh Palmucci, who rallied for a 9-7 victory, and No. 6 James Conway added a 7-1 decision at 184 to preserve the lead late in the lineup.

Conway’s victory was sealed by a third-period takedown with three seconds remaining, while Garcia opened his bout with a takedown in the first period before putting the match beyond reach with a string of third-period scores. Those late scoring sequences were logged in the bout transcripts and show the timing of the swings that decided the dual.

Sacred Heart recorded wins at 174 (Aidan Zarrella, 4-2), 197 (Chris DeLena, 5-1) and 285 (Brendan Gilchrist, 4-2), and John Sheehy of Sacred Heart posted a 10-6 decision at 133. Despite the Pioneers’ five bout victories, the combination of a technical fall, a fall and major decisions for Franklin & Marshall supplied the bonus points that decided the outcome.

The result moved Franklin & Marshall to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in EIWA duals, while Sacred Heart fell to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
