South Dakota State knocked off Oklahoma 20-13 in a Big 12 dual at the University of Oklahoma in Norman on Feb. 9, 2024. The visitors left with a seven-point margin in a meet decided by bonus-point performances at two weight classes.

The decisive moment came at 141 pounds, where Clay Carlson delivered a dominant 15-0 technical fall over Carter Schmidt, putting five team points on the board for South Dakota State. That emphatic bonus victory turned into the biggest swing of the night and was the single-largest scoring play of the dual.

At heavyweight, Oklahoma got back in the match when Josh Heindselman picked up a 14-6 major decision over Luke Rasmussen, adding four team points and narrowing the gap. Heindselman’s major kept the Sooners within reach, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the cushion created by Carlson’s tech fall.

With nine of the dual’s team points coming from those two bonus results, South Dakota State’s ability to secure a tech fall proved the difference. Oklahoma countered with a big result at 285, yet South Dakota State collected the remaining scoring needed to finish at 20 and walk out of Norman with the win.
