Virginia @ NC State Recap
NC State edged Virginia 19-17 in Raleigh on January 9, 2026, a tight ACC dual that came down to bonus points. The final margin reflected a handful of high-impact results rather than a run of close decisions, with four bonus-point bouts deciding the outcome.
Virginia grabbed two major decisions that kept the visitors in the hunt. Rocco Hayes scored a 13-3 major over Brad Yokum for four team points, and Colton Washleski, ranked #25, posted a 13-4 major decision over Brogan Tucker to add another four points for Virginia.
NC State answered with its own bonus work. At 165 pounds, #12 Will Denny delivered a 9-1 major decision over Michael Murphy, putting four points on the board for the Wolfpack. The decisive blow came at heavyweight when #2 Isaac Trumble pinned #32 Brenan Morgan, earning six team points and swinging the dual in NC State’s favor.
Those three NC State bonus points combined with the Wolfpack’s major and pin offset Virginia’s two majors and produced the two-point final. The matchup featured a clash of ranked heavyweights and a ranked 165-pounder who both came through for NC State, while Virginia’s majors from Hayes and #25 Washleski kept the dual competitive until Trumble’s fall provided the difference.
