Utah Valley @ South Dakota State Recap
South Dakota State edged Utah Valley 21-16 in Brookings, South Dakota on January 31, 2025, in a Big 12 dual. The difference came down to bonus points, with four bouts ending in a pin, major decision, or technical fall that swung the team score.
Utah Valley collected two big team-scoring results when Kase Mauger recorded a fall over Cale Seaton at 133 pounds for six team points, and Terrell Barraclough posted an 8-0 major decision over Marcus Espinoza-Owens at 165 for four points. Those bonus outcomes kept UVU firmly in contention late into the dual.
South Dakota State fought back behind a pair of bonus wins of its own. Cade DeVos scored a 12-2 major decision at 174 to earn four points, narrowing the gap, and at heavyweight Luke Rasmussen closed the dual by dominating Jack Forbes and rolling to a 20-4 technical fall for five team points. Rasmussen’s technical fall was the decisive swing that put SDSU over the top in a tight meet.
Only a few bouts decided the dual, and those bonus-point victories defined the narrative. The majors and the technical fall ultimately mattered more than the individual decisions, producing a five-point final margin and giving South Dakota State the team victory in Brookings.
