Cornell defeats Binghamton 26-9 in Ithaca

Big Red won the first eight bouts to build a 26-0 lead on Senior Day; No. 3 Meyer Shapiro closed early with a 19-4 technical fall.

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell defeated Binghamton 26-9 on Saturday at Cornell's Friedman Wrestling Center.

The Big Red won the first eight bouts to build a 26-0 lead before Binghamton recorded late victories, and Cornell honored its senior class during the dual, according to the host school's recap.

Greg Diakomihalis opened the dual at 125 pounds with two first-period takedowns and a second-period escape in a 7-3 decision. Diakomihalis entered the dual ranked No. 26 at 125.

At 133, No. 18 Tyler Ferrara used three first-period takedowns to win 9-2. Foster Cardinale followed with a 7-3 decision at 141, scoring a 3-point takedown early and another in the third to secure the margin.

Josh Saunders provided a tight win at 149, edging Caleb Sweet 4-3 after an opening three-point takedown; stalling and a late penalty did not change the outcome.

No. 3 Meyer Shapiro supplied the first bonus points for Cornell with a 19-4 technical fall at 157. Shapiro recorded six takedowns across two periods and closed the match in the second period to reach the 15-point technical-fall threshold.

Benny Rogers won a high-scoring 14-9 decision at 165, using a second-period sequence that included an escape, a takedown and a two-point nearfall to open separation.

No. 2 Simon Ruiz held off No. 19 Carter Baer, 2-0, at 174. Ruiz escaped at 1:53 of Period 2 for the match's first point and was credited with a riding-time point that produced the final margin.

Louie Cerchio won 7-1 at 184 with two 3-point takedowns and a third-period riding point; Will Ebert entered the bout ranked No. 32 at 184.

Binghamton broke through at 197 when Mikey Squires recorded a fall over Carson Crace after multiple first-period scores and additional second-period offense.

In the heavyweight bout, Trent Sibble defeated Cash Henderson 3-2 in overtime. Sibble recorded an escape in the third to force extra time and prevailed after a stalling call and a penalty were assessed in the tiebreaking period.

Cornell's early bonus-point results established the team outcome before Binghamton's late wins could affect the final score.
