Falls and Majors Decide Tight Dual — Michigan State 22, Northwestern 20
Bonus-point finishes and late major decisions defined a back-and-forth Big Ten dual in East Lansing, with Michigan State edging Northwestern by two points.
Michigan State held off a late Northwestern surge to win a 22-20 dual at Jenison Field House on Feb. 1, a meet decided by multiple bonus-point outcomes rather than a line of narrow decisions. The Spartans’ combination of pins and a key major-decision margin provided the edge in a duel that swung quickly across weight classes.
No. 23 Kael Wisler opened the scoring with a 10-3 decision at 197 to give Michigan State an early team lead. The Spartans extended that advantage moments later when heavyweight Josh Terrill recorded a first-period fall over Gabe Christenson — a bonus that proved pivotal in the final team math.
Northwestern answered in waves. No. 25 Dedrick Navarro edged Nick Corday, 2-1, at 125, and No. 33 Billy Dekraker delivered a pin at 141 after building a large lead. Those high-value outcomes kept the Wildcats within range and set the stage for a seesaw second half.
Michigan State regained breathing room through more bonus scoring: Caleb Weiand ground out a 1-0 decision at 133, Clayton Jones produced a second-period fall at 149, and Darius Marines closed his bout with a late third-period takedown to secure a 10-2 major decision at 157. Those results pushed the Spartans to a sizable lead entering the final sequence of matches.
Northwestern mounted a furious comeback over the last three bouts. Jacob Bostelman clinched a 3-1 decision at 165 with a last-second takedown, and Eddie Enright answered with a 19-6 major decision at 174. J.D. Perez followed with another major at 184, but the Wildcats’ rally fell just short; the collection of pins and majors on both sides left Michigan State ahead by two points when the math was done.
The dual distilled to a handful of bonus-point swings: a pair of pins and a major for Michigan State, matched by a pin and two majors late for Northwestern. Those high-value results, more than the tight decisions, determined the outcome in a dual that kept both rosters on edge until the final whistle.
