No. 9 NC State Edges No. 12 Pittsburgh, 18-13
A pair of late momentum swings for Pittsburgh couldn't overcome NC State’s upperweights; No. 2 Isaac Trumble’s third-period takedown at heavyweight provided the decisive margin.
No. 9 NC State left Fitzgerald Field House with an 18-13 ACC road win over No. 12 Pittsburgh in a dual defined by a handful of pivotal bouts.
Pittsburgh seized momentum in the middle of the lineups when No. 14 Dylan Evans recorded a 12-2 major decision at 157, delivering four team points and keeping the Panthers within striking distance.
The night’s biggest upset came at 174, where No. 16 Luca Augustine toppled No. 6 Matty Singleton, 7-2. Augustine’s victory required extra time — he delivered the go-ahead takedown in the overtime period — and momentarily put Pitt in position to press for the dual.
NC State’s depth up top ultimately supplied the margin. No. 2 Isaac Trumble beat No. 16 Dayton Pitzer, 5-2, at 285; a third-period takedown by Trumble late in the period helped secure the decision and the team points that pushed the Wolfpack ahead for good.
State had built an early cushion, winning the first four bouts to open a 12-0 advantage. Pittsburgh rallied with bonus and upset points down the stretch, including the major at 157 and Augustine’s overtime victory, but could not overcome Trumble’s clinching contribution at heavyweight.
The dual finished as a close, consequential meeting between two ACC programs in which a small number of decisive matches swung the scoreboard.
