NC State edges Stanford 21-20 at Maples Pavilion
Bonus-point victories by NC State and a pair of ranked upsets by Stanford left the dual decided by a single team point.
STANFORD, Calif. — NC State edged Stanford 21-20 Friday at Maples Pavilion in a dual meet that was decided by bonus-point swings and late decisions.
NC State built an early advantage with bonus scoring. No. 11 Ryan Jack won by fall at 141 pounds after a reversal, and No. 7 Koy Buesgens followed with a 14-5 major decision at 149. Those two bouts supplied a total of 10 team points for NC State and established an early lead.
Stanford countered in the middle of the card. No. 9 Daniel Cardenas recorded a technical fall, 21-5, at 157 to earn five team points. Later, No. 13 Nico Provo defeated No. 1 Vincent Robinson, 4-1, with a takedown 23 seconds into sudden-victory overtime to win the 125-pound bout.
NC State supplemented its margin with tight decisions at 165 and 174. Will Denny held a 6-5 decision at 165, and Matty Singleton won 8-2 at 174, both outcomes contributing one-point decisions that maintained a narrow Pack lead.
Stanford reeled off back-to-back results at 184 and 197, including a pin by Angelo Posada at 197, to pull the Cardinal within one point. NC State clinched necessary bonus scoring later in the lineup when No. 2 Isaac Trumble finished with a 22-6 technical fall at 285, adding five team points.
The dual’s final bout went to Stanford’s Tyler Knox at 133 by a 6-3 decision, but the earlier combination of NC State’s fall, major decision and heavyweight technical fall kept the Wolfpack ahead on the team scoreboard.
The meet featured multiple ranked matchups across the card and swung on bonus-point outcomes: Jack’s fall and Buesgens’ major decision provided the crucial advantage, while Cardenas’ technical fall and Provo’s upset of the top seed kept Stanford in contention through the closing matches.
