Clarion @ Michigan State Recap
Michigan State handled Clarion 30-8 at Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing on Feb. 2, 2025, outlasting the visitors largely through bonus-point wrestling. Clarion picked up two big major decisions early in the night as Travis Clawson beat Caleb Weiand 9-1 at 125 pounds and Gianni Silvestri topped Jaden Crumpler 12-1 at 141 for eight team points and momentum for the road team. Those wins showed Clarion could produce high-scoring results against a Big Ten opponent.
The turning stretch came when Michigan State answered with significant bonus scoring of its own. Braden Stauffenberg’s 19-4 technical fall at 157, Marty Larkin’s 15-0 technical fall at 174, and Remy Cotton’s 19-4 technical fall at 197 accounted for 15 bonus points and swung control back to the Spartans. Those three dominant performances created a margin Clarion couldn’t overcome, turning a competitive dual into a comfortable Spartan victory.
Beyond the bonus bouts, Michigan State’s depth and ability to secure bonus points proved decisive in what finished as a 30-8 result. Clarion’s two majors were the night’s biggest upsets on the individual level, but Michigan State’s technical falls supplied the extra team points that decided the dual. The match left Michigan State with a convincing home win while Clarion showed flashes that could pay off in future nonconference trips.
