George Mason @ SIU Edwardsville Recap
George Mason defeated SIU Edwardsville 32-8 at the University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Ill., on November 24, 2024. The margin was driven by a string of bonus-point victories that swung the dual in Mason’s favor after an early big result for the home team.
SIUE’s Danny Martinez delivered a statement at 141 pounds, beating Dominic Hargrove 16-1 by technical fall to earn five team points and give the Cougars a burst of momentum. That performance kept the meet competitive, but it proved to be SIUE’s lone bonus salvo against a Mason lineup that responded aggressively.
George Mason answered with a run of bonus wins that decided the dual. At 157 pounds DJ McGee topped Brock Woodcock 16-8 by major decision, adding four points, then at 165 Evan Maag finished Bradley Gillum by fall for six points. Mason capped the surge at heavyweight when James Blackman downed Jake Fernandez 13-4 by major decision, another four-team-point effort. Those three bonus results provided the bulk of George Mason’s scoring and turned a close contest into a comfortable margin.
The final 32-8 score reflected Mason’s ability to collect bonus points when it mattered most, while SIUE’s Martinez was a standout individual performance in an otherwise difficult night for the hosts. The sequence of a tech fall countered by multiple majors and a pin made the difference in this November dual.
