South Dakota State routs California Baptist, 36-3

The Jackrabbits piled up six bonus-point victories in Brookings, including a pin of No. 28 Cooper Shore and a 19-4 technical fall, to hand Cal Baptist a 36-3 loss.

BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State beat California Baptist 36-3 on Jan. 23, 2026, at South Dakota State University, collecting six bonus-point victories that put the dual out of reach.

An early fall set the tone. Daniel Guanajuato pinned No. 28 Cooper Shore at 125 pounds, a result the event recap described as a six-team-point swing that removed the possibility of a narrow finish.

Cale Seaton followed with a 19-4 technical fall at 133, finishing with six takedowns and an escape to reach the technical-fall margin. That sequence added five team points and widened the lead.

South Dakota State extended the bonus runs through the middle weights. No. 22 Julian Tagg delivered a 15-5 major decision at 141, pushing the Jackrabbits further ahead with a multi-score third period that included a takedown, nearfall and a riding-time point. At 165, Marcus Espinoza-Owens recorded a 14-4 major decision, another bonus result that helped build the margin.

The upper weights produced additional majors. No. 5 Bennett Berge won 14-4 by major decision at 197, while No. 25 Brock Fettig closed with a 14-4 major at 184 after a string of third-period takedowns and a riding-time point.

A closely contested match at 157 featured No. 22 Cael Swensen edging No. 33 Drayden Morton, 3-2. Morton briefly took the lead with a third-period reversal, and Swensen answered with a reversal late in the period to reclaim the edge and hold on for the decision.

California Baptist’s lone victory came at 149, where Paul Kelly beat Colin Dupill 8-2. Kelly opened with an early takedown, added an escape later and closed with a takedown as the clock expired to secure the decision and Cal Baptist’s only team points.

South Dakota State’s true freshman Micah Hach sealed the dual at heavyweight with a 5-0 decision. Hach recorded an escape and a third-period takedown in the final seconds and earned a riding-time point to reach the final margin.

The Lancers were unable to convert early opportunities into bonus scores, and the Jackrabbits’ collection of a fall, a tech fall and multiple major decisions produced a 33-point margin on the scoreboard.

California Baptist’s game summary noted South Dakota State came into the dual ranked No. 14 overall, and the university’s recap said the Jackrabbits bounced back with the victory. The final score reflected the impact of several high-value results that prevented a Cal Baptist comeback.
