Penn State @ Iowa Recap
Penn State knocked off Iowa 29-6 in Iowa on February 9, 2024, a dual decided largely by bonus-point wins. The Nittany Lions piled up major decisions across multiple weight classes to build a lead Iowa could not overcome.
Aaron Nagao’s 11-0 major decision at 133 pounds set the tone for Penn State’s bonus attack, and Levi Haines followed with a 12-0 major at 157. Carter Starocci added a 13-5 major decision at 174, and Greg Kerkvliet closed out the big-margin scoring with a 9-1 major at heavyweight, each worth four team points. Those four majors accounted for 16 of Penn State’s 29 team points and proved decisive.
Bernie Truax’s 8-0 major at 184 was another example of Penn State converting matches into bonus points, underscoring how the Nittany Lions accumulated the margin. Iowa was limited to six team points and could not match the number of bonus victories needed to swing the dual.
Overall the dual was a clear example of bonus-point wrestling determining the outcome. Penn State’s ability to turn multiple bouts into major decisions created an insurmountable cushion and left Iowa scrambling for answers on February 9 in Iowa City.
