Oklahoma tops Arizona State 31-9 behind three bonus-point wins

Carter Schmidt and DJ Parker each recorded major decisions and No. 21 Juan Mora closed with a 23-7 technical fall as the Sooners rolled to a Big 12 dual victory in Norman.

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma topped Arizona State 31-9 Sunday at the University of Oklahoma, securing three bonus-point victories that created the decisive margin in the Big 12 dual.

The run of bonus scoring began at 133 pounds when Carter Schmidt posted an 11-0 major decision. Schmidt used multiple takedowns, an escape and a riding-time point to finish the bout by major decision.

At 197 pounds DJ Parker followed with an 11-1 major decision over Colton Hawks, who entered the match ranked No. 28. Parker scored multiple takedowns, added an escape and earned a riding-time point to reach the 11-1 final.

Oklahoma’s largest swing came at heavyweight when No. 21 Juan Mora recorded a 23-7 technical fall over Damion Schunke. Mora accumulated takedowns across the three periods and the technical fall produced the five-point bonus that widened the Sooners’ lead late in the dual.

Oklahoma also collected a forfeit at 149 and a decision recorded as DEF at 157 on the bout sheet, adding to the team total.

No. 8 Carter Schubert opened the dual with a 5-3 decision at 174. Schubert answered an early 3-point takedown by Cael Valencia with an escape and a takedown in the first period, then added a second-period escape to preserve the margin.

Arizona State recorded three wins. No. 15 Nicco Ruiz beat Peyten Kellar 9-2 at 165 with a first-period takedown, a second-period reversal and a late third-period takedown plus riding time. Pierson Manville, listed at No. 21, posted a 2-0 decision at 141. Anecito Vigil won at 125 in sudden victory, ending overtime with a three-point takedown for a 4-1 result.

Oklahoma’s game-day release noted the meet was senior day and listed the Sooners at No. 18; the school also summarized the team at 10-4 after the dual. Arizona State’s release recapped the 31-9 final and the individual results from the visitor perspective.
