Illinois @ Purdue Recap
Illinois edged Purdue 19-18 in West Lafayette on Feb. 16, 2024, a one-point dual that came down to bonus-point bouts. The Big Ten meeting at Purdue University produced four bonus victories that ultimately decided the outcome, with Illinois just barely outdueling the host team.
Purdue’s Matt Ramos delivered one of the biggest margins of the night, scoring a 17-1 technical fall at 125 pounds for five team points. That dominant performance kept Purdue firmly in the mix, and Stoney Buell’s 11-3 major decision at 165 pounds added another four points to Purdue’s total, creating a strong push for the Boilermakers in the bonus column.
Illinois answered with two bonus wins of its own that proved decisive. Danny Pucino pinned Christian White at 141 pounds, a six-point swing that was the single largest scoring play of the dual. Edmond Ruth’s 11-2 major decision at 174 pounds added four more points for Illinois, and those two bonus results combined to offset Purdue’s tech fall and major, giving Illinois the one-point edge.
With the difference coming down to bonus-point finishes, the dual highlighted how quickly momentum can shift when pins and majors fall on both sides. Illinois left West Lafayette with the narrow victory, 19-18, after matching and just surpassing Purdue’s bonus production.
