Iowa State Men’s Wrestling beat West Virginia Men’s Wrestling 29-11 in Ames, IA on February 2, 2024 at Iowa State University. The Cyclones piled up bonus points that proved decisive in the Big 12 dual.
Evan Frost’s 17-1 technical fall at 133 pounds was an early momentum-grabber for Iowa State, worth five team points. The middle of the lineup provided the biggest swing when MJ Gaitan recorded a fall at 174, a six-point score that created separation and swung the team score firmly in Iowa State’s favor. At heavyweight, Yonger Bastida closed the dual with a dominant 23-8 technical fall, another five-point bonus that helped salt away the victory.
West Virginia did answer with quality performances, most notably Jordan Titus’s 11-3 major decision at 141 and Dennis Robin’s 15-5 major at 184, each earning four team points. Those bonus wins kept the Mountaineers competitive, but they were outpaced by Iowa State’s higher-value finishes.
Iowa State’s accumulation of multiple bonus-point victories, especially the pin and two technical falls, made the difference in the final margin. The Cyclones converted several chances into bonus points and held on to a comfortable 29-11 win.
