Indiana defeats Purdue 20-16 in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana defeated Purdue 20-16 on Friday night at Indiana University Bloomington, rallying in the later weights to secure the dual.

No. 14 Jacob Moran opened the meet with a technical fall, scoring multiple takedowns across both periods to win 21-5 at 125 and give Indiana an early advantage.

Purdue answered with consecutive victories at 133 and 141. No. 29 Blake Boarman edged Blaine Frazier 6-2 at 133, sealing the decision with a late third-period takedown, and Greyson Clark scored an 8-0 major decision at 141 to put the Boilermakers ahead.

The meet remained tight through the middle weights. Joey Buttler produced a dramatic late takedown in the 149-pound bout, securing a 5-4 decision with a three-point shot in the final seconds. At 157, Stoney Buell held off a third-period comeback by Bryce Lowery and earned a 10-9 victory on a riding-time point.

No. 3 Joey Blaze gave Purdue a lift at 165, nipping No. 18 Tyler Lillard 4-3 after a first-period takedown and a decisive third-period escape. After the 165-pound match, Purdue held a multi-point advantage.

Indiana mounted its rally beginning at 174. Derek Gilcher scored a 9-2 victory over Brody Baumann, a result that cut into Purdue’s lead. Sam Goin followed with a 7-1 decision at 184, using a second-period takedown and late third-period work to extend Indiana’s momentum.

The turning point came at 197 when No. 21 Gabe Sollars pinned Noah Weaver, a match-ending victory that gave Indiana the lead entering the heavyweight bout. The available bout record notes a first-period takedown for Sollars and records the pin but does not list the time of the fall.
