Clarion @ Buffalo Recap

Buffalo Men's Wrestling edged Clarion Men's Wrestling 18-16 at the University at Buffalo on February 8, 2024 in a tight MAC dual that came down to bonus-point wrestling. The narrow two-point margin masked the impact of three bonus victories that decided the outcome.

The pivotal performance came at 157 pounds, where Nick Stampoulos scored a 19-4 technical fall for Buffalo, earning five crucial team points. That technical fall was the biggest single swing of the dual and gave Buffalo a cushion they would need as the dual tightened. Stampoulos’ dominance on the mat provided Buffalo’s primary burst of offense.

Buffalo added to its bonus total at 174 pounds when Jay Nivison delivered an 11-3 major decision, adding four more team points and further separating the hosts from Clarion. Those two bonus results combined for nine team points and formed the backbone of Buffalo’s 18-point total.

Clarion stayed very much in the fight thanks to Kyle Schickel’s 10-1 major decision at 149 pounds, a four-point swing that pulled Clarion within striking distance and kept the outcome unsettled down the stretch. In the end Buffalo’s two bonus victories versus Clarion’s lone bonus were the difference in a classic close dual, with the Bulls prevailing by two.
