Missouri @ Cornell Recap

Cornell edged Missouri 20-16 at the Friedman Wrestling Center in New York on January 28, 2024 in a dual that came down to bonus points and a couple of dominant individual performances. The Ivy hosts left town with a four-point victory in a tight Big 12 vs Ivy showdown.

Missouri kept itself very much in the match with two big results. At 125 pounds Noah Surtin pinned Brett Ungar, earning Missouri six team points, and at 165 Keegan O’Toole notched a 13-5 major decision over Julian Ramirez for four more team points. Those bonus scores were critical in keeping the Tigers within striking distance.

Cornell’s margin came on its own bonus work. Meyer Shapiro produced a 14-4 major decision at 157 over Brock Mauller to collect four team points, and Chris Foca followed with a 14-1 major decision at 184 against Clayton Whiting for another four. Those two majors provided the scoring swing that ultimately separated the teams.

In the end the difference was bonus points: both squads picked up big wins, but Cornell’s pair of major decisions offset Missouri’s pin and major, and that four-point swing decided the dual. The meet was competitive across the board, but the majors at 157 and 184 proved to be the decisive outcomes in Cornell’s 20-16 victory.
