Davidson edged Virginia Military Institute 24-19 at VMI in Lexington, Virginia on February 17, 2024 in a tight SoCon dual. The five-point margin came down to which team could pile up bonus points when it mattered.

VMI grabbed multiple bonus victories that kept the home side competitive: Tony Burke delivered a 9-0 major decision at 125 pounds, Dyson Dunham recorded a fall at 133, and Ryan Vigil followed with a pin at 149. Those three bonus results provided VMI with a substantial chunk of its team total and put pressure on Davidson through the lower weights.

Davidson answered in the upper weights with its own string of bonus wins. Tanner Peake’s 12-4 major decision at 157 started the swing, but Bryce Sanderlin’s 18-3 technical fall at 165 served as the turning point, turning momentum toward Davidson and narrowing VMI’s margin. Wyatt Ferguson sealed matters with a fall at 184, and those bonus points ultimately pushed Davidson past VMI.

In the end the dual was decided by bonus scoring on both sides. VMI’s early majors and pins kept the match close, but Davidson’s late run of a major, a technical fall, and a pin created the difference in a 24-19 road victory.
