Binghamton @ Northwestern Recap

Binghamton picked up a 21-15 road win over Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois on Feb. 16, 2024, with bonus point wrestling deciding the dual. The Broncs piled up majors at key weights and held off Northwestern despite a pair of bonus victories for the home team.

Micah Roes provided four team points with a dominant 9-0 major decision at 133 pounds, and Northwestern answered in the middle weights when Aiden Vandenbush slammed an 11-0 major at 149 and Trevor Chumbley turned in a 19-3 technical fall at 157 for five team points. Those bonus wins kept the Wildcats within striking distance late in the dual.

The turning point came in the upper weights, where Lou DePrez delivered a big 11-1 major decision at 197 to swing four critical points back to Binghamton. With the dual still within reach, heavyweight Cory Day sealed the result with a 9-0 major decision at 285, adding another four team points and effectively closing out the meet.

In the end Binghamton’s ability to secure multiple major decisions, particularly from DePrez and Day in the closing bouts, made the difference. Northwestern’s majors and Chumbley’s technical fall provided strong bursts of offense, but Binghamton’s bonus-point scoring at several weights was the decisive factor in the 21-15 final.
