No. 7 Iowa defeats Purdue, 32-6, in West Lafayette
Iowa built a 17-0 intermission lead on early bonus points from Dean Peterson and Drake Ayala and closed the dual with a late pin by Harvey Ludington.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — No. 7 Iowa defeated Purdue, 32-6, on Sunday at Holloway Gymnasium.
Iowa opened the dual with a string of victories that produced a 17-0 lead at intermission. No. 6 Dean Peterson won the 125-pound bout, 9-2, and No. 8 Drake Ayala followed with a 19-4 technical fall at 133 pounds. Kale Petersen then beat Isaiah Schaefer, 7-4, in sudden-victory overtime to extend Iowa’s run.
Ryder Block and Victor Voinovich III added 5-0 decisions at 149 and 157, respectively, before intermission to put the Hawkeyes well ahead. The home team’s official box score and postmatch account show Iowa had built a sizable lead by halftime.
Purdue answered in the 165-pound slot when Joey Blaze, listed at No. 4 in the rankings, edged No. 3 Michael Caliendo, 7-4. Blaze’s second-period 3-point takedown proved pivotal in the bout’s decisive sequence, and late third-period scoring and a riding-time point preserved the margin for Purdue.
Iowa regained momentum at 174 when Patrick Kennedy scored 15 points to win his match, and Gabe Arnold followed with a 4-1 decision at 184. Harvey Ludington then recorded a pin at 197 to add bonus points for Iowa.
Purdue closed the dual at heavyweight when No. 28 Hayden Filipovich secured a 4-1 sudden-victory decision over Gage Marty in overtime.
