California Baptist defeats CSU Bakersfield 30-12 in Riverside

Drayden Morton’s technical fall and a pair of pins helped California Baptist build a margin it held to the finish in a Feb. 21 dual at California Baptist University.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist beat CSU Bakersfield 30-12 in a dual meet at California Baptist University on Feb. 21.

Drayden Morton, listed No. 33 at 157 pounds, ended his match by technical fall, 19-4, a late run that pushed California Baptist’s advantage. Morton opened with a first-period takedown and a four-point nearfall, then added takedowns in the third period at the 26- and 11-second marks to reach the technical-fall margin.

No. 32 Richard Murillo provided a late highlight for California Baptist at 133 pounds, winning 9-6 with a takedown in the first overtime. Murillo led 4-0 after Period 2 and forced overtime when he recorded a +1 to tie the match at 6-6 in regulation; he finished the bout with the overtime takedown.

California Baptist also collected multiple bonus-point wins inside regulation. Richie Clementi recorded a major decision, 11-1, at 149 pounds, and Eli Sheeren pinned Chris Neal at 197 pounds. Gabe Schumm added a pin at 165 pounds, and Tristan Kemp closed his match at heavyweight with a 5-1 decision that included a third-period takedown.

Timothy Cowan’s 7-3 decision at 184 provided an important margin of scoring for California Baptist late in the dual. Cowan scored a three-point takedown in the first period and secured the outcome with a takedown in the closing seconds of the third.

CSU Bakersfield produced its own pivotal results. No. 30 Richard Castro-Sandoval upset No. 28 Cooper Shore at 125 pounds, winning 6-2; Castro-Sandoval opened with a three-point takedown and preserved the edge with a riding-time point in the third. Santino Sanchez registered a fall at 141 pounds for CSU Bakersfield, finishing with a 10-0 scoreboard entry after multiple nearfall and takedown sequences.

The dual featured sustained scoring swings in the middle weights, with Murillo’s overtime decision and Morton’s technical fall serving as decisive bonus-point contributions that helped California Baptist maintain separation after CSU Bakersfield’s ranked win at 125.
