Rutgers @ Michigan State Recap

Rutgers knocked off Michigan State 22-13 in East Lansing on January 19, 2024, at Michigan State University. The Scarlet Knights collected the decisive bonus points needed to edge the Spartans in a physical Big Ten dual that came down to a pair of technical falls and one major decision.

Dylan Shawver’s technical fall at 133 pounds was a major swing for Rutgers. His 22-6 tech gave Rutgers five team points and provided a significant cushion in the middle of the lineup. That bonus result forced Michigan State to look for bonus scoring of their own to keep the dual within reach.

Michigan State answered at 184 pounds when Layne Malczewski delivered a 19-6 major decision, netting four points and keeping the Spartans alive late. The back-and-forth intensity ended up favoring Rutgers, however, when John Poznanski scored another 22-6 technical fall at 197 pounds, adding five more team points for the visitors and effectively sealing the outcome.

Those two technical falls by Rutgers, worth a combined 10 bonus points, proved to be the difference against Michigan State’s major. With bonus production on both sides of the mat but extra-margin victories favoring Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights walked out with a 22-13 road win in East Lansing.
