West Virginia @ Arizona State Recap
West Virginia Men's Wrestling edged Arizona State Men's Wrestling 20-19 in Tempe, AZ on January 9, 2026. The dual came down to bonus-point wrestling on both sides, with West Virginia squeaking out a one-point victory thanks to multiple bonus results that the Sun Devils’ ranked wins could not fully counter.
West Virginia collected three bonus victories that produced the bulk of its scoring. Louie Gill posted a 14-2 major decision over Anecito Vigil to earn four team points, TJ Langley recorded a fall for six team points, and Ian Bush, listed at #23, beat Azizbek Fayzullaev 13-1 by major decision for another four points. Those bonus outcomes gave West Virginia the extra margin it needed in a tight meet.
Arizona State answered with big performances of its own. Kyler Larkin, the nation’s #5 at 133, topped Gunner Andrick (#16) 7-4 by decision. Nicco Ruiz, ranked #18, ran up a 20-4 technical fall at 165, and heavyweight David Szuba, ranked #19, delivered a 20-4 technical fall to add five team points. Despite those ranked victories and two tech falls at the upper weights, ASU fell one point short.
The clear difference was West Virginia’s trio of bonus-point bouts. Langley’s fall and the two major decisions supplied a cushion that proved decisive against Arizona State’s collection of ranked wins and technical falls. In a dual decided by a single point, bonus scoring made the margin.
