Minnesota @ Northwestern Recap
Minnesota beat Northwestern 29-12 in Evanston, IL on January 26, 2025, closing the dual with a collection of bonus-point victories that created the decisive margin. The Golden Gophers piled up tech falls and majors across the middle and upper weights and left little room for a Northwestern comeback.
Three matches stood out. At 285 pounds Gable Steveson closed the night with a 19-3 technical fall that added five team points and essentially sealed the outcome. Earlier, Max McEnelly’s 19-4 technical fall at 184 pounds was another five-point blow that swung momentum firmly to Minnesota, and Vance VomBaur’s 20-4 technical fall at 141 pounds produced a quick burst of bonus scoring. Minnesota also collected major decisions from Andrew Sparks at 165 (11-3) and Clayton Whiting at 174 (18-4), turning tight moments into a sustained scoring edge.
Northwestern’s highlight came at 125 pounds, where Dedrick Navarro pinned Quincy Hulverson for six team points. That fall was the Wildcat answer, but Minnesota’s string of bonus wins across multiple classes kept the visitors comfortably ahead. In sum, Northwestern got a big individual result at 125, but Minnesota’s multiple tech falls and majors were the difference in the dual.
