NC State pulls away from Duke for 32-7 road win in Durham

A technical fall and a string of major decisions powered the Wolfpack; No. 2 Isaac Trumble’s major at heavyweight sealed the dual.

DURHAM, N.C. — NC State defeated Duke 32-7 on Feb. 13 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, pulling away behind a technical fall and a string of major decisions that produced seven bonus-point results for the Wolfpack.

Duke opened the dual with a 1-0 decision at 125 when Spencer von Savoye recorded an escape at 0:32 of the second period to decide the bout. NC State responded immediately, winning the next five matches to build a 21-3 advantage before the Blue Devils could register another scoring sequence.

No. 19 Zach Redding started the run with a 17-2 technical fall at 133, using a first-period nearfall and a string of second-period takedowns and nearfalls to reach the 15-point margin. No. 11 Ryan Jack followed with a 15-6 major decision at 141, and No. 4 Koy Buesgens added a 17-5 major at 149 to widen the gap.

NC State extended its cushion through the middle weights. Luca Felix posted an 11-3 major decision at 157 and No. 10 Will Denny compiled a 21-10 major at 165. Those bonus results left Duke with a large deficit before the Blue Devils’ lone bonus-point result.

Duke’s only bonus point came at 174 when No. 24 Aidan Wallace beat Latrell Schafer 14-3 by major decision. Wallace’s early scoring and riding-time edge produced the margin that the Blue Devils could not turn into a rally.

Patrick Brophy’s 14-3 major at 197 kept the momentum on NC State’s side and set the stage for the heavyweight bout. No. 2 Isaac Trumble closed the dual with an 11-3 major decision over No. 23 Connor Barket; Trumble’s sequence included a takedown recorded at 19 seconds of the second period that helped build the margin that finished the match and sealed the 32-7 final.

The Wolfpack won eight of the 10 bouts and recorded seven bonus-point victories on the road. The result improved NC State’s dual record and maintained its place in conference play, and it left Duke with only the two individual decisions noted at 125 and 184 as non-major outcomes.

NC State’s athletics release noted the team improved to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in ACC competition following the win. The dual combined an early escape for Duke with a sustained sequence of bonus results by NC State that decided the meeting well before the final whistle.
