American @ Penn State Recap
Penn State Men’s Wrestling rolled past American University 50-3 in State College, PA on February 21, 2025. The Nittany Lions piled up bonus points all night, turning what might have been a closer dual into a lopsided scoreline by midmatch.
What decided the dual was Penn State’s string of bonus-point victories. The Lions recorded nine matches worth extra team points, mixing technical falls and falls that cut through the opposition. At 125 pounds Luke Lilledahl posted a 20-3 technical fall to get the bonus early, and Mitchell Mesenbrink did the same at 165 with a 19-2 technical fall. Those dominant techs kept the pressure on American’s lineup and limited any chance for momentum swings.
The pins made the margin impossible to overcome. Tyler Kasak’s fall at 157 provided six team points and was followed later by a match-clinching fall from heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet at 285. Those falls, along with additional pins through the card, turned tightly contested moments into a runaway score and brought the team total to 50.
American managed just a lone decision point on the board, while Penn State’s combination of technical falls and falls defined the night. The barrage of bonus wrestling across the middle and heavy weights was the clear turning point, producing the 47-point margin and a comfortable win for the Big Ten program.
