Penn State steamrolls No. 10 Michigan, 38-3, behind a wave of tech falls

Five technical falls and a major decision turned Friday’s dual in Ann Arbor into a rout as Penn State piled up bonus points and closed the road match before Michigan could recover.

Penn State visited the University of Michigan and left Crisler Center with a 38-3 road win, the Nittany Lions’ offense turning a competitive early card into an overwhelming team margin.

No. 1 Luke Lilledahl set the tone at 125 with a 21-5 technical fall, adding takedowns and a third-period reversal that ended the bout decisively. Marcus Blaze followed with a 17-2 tech at 133 to push the dual into runaway territory early.

Nate Desmond provided an edge in the tight 141 bout, scoring the sudden-victory takedown to seal an 8-5 win and keep Penn State’s momentum intact through the break. At 149, No. 1 Shayne Van Ness turned a late third-period takedown and riding-time advantage into a 9-1 major decision, the kind of bonus-point swing that defined the evening.

The second half saw No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink and No. 1 Levi Haines add identical finishes: dominant technical falls that widened the gap beyond reach. Rocco Welsh and Josh Barr also contributed major-margin wins, leaving Michigan’s lineup searching for answers as the dual slipped away.

Michigan’s lone victory came in the final bout when No. 5 Taye Ghadiali eked out a 5-1 decision at heavyweight, but the late win could not erase the damage from Penn State’s five technical falls and the major decision that produced the 35-point margin.

The result carried broader context: the Nittany Lions arrived in Ann Arbor with an unbeaten team ledger and used top-end, ranked wrestlers to manufacture bonus scoring on the road, while Michigan closed its home slate before a packed Crisler Center crowd.
