Rider defeats George Mason 30-13 in Fairfax

Rider built an early lead with four bonus-point results — including tech falls by two ranked wrestlers — and held off a George Mason middle-card rally at the GMU Field House on Jan. 30, 2026.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Rider defeated George Mason 30-13 at the GMU Field House on Jan. 30, 2026.

Rider seized control early with multiple bonus-point outcomes that established a margin George Mason could not erase. Will Betancourt opened the string at 133 with an 11-2 major decision, then No. 21 Elijah Griffin finished his 141-pound bout by technical fall, 17-2, after a first-period nearfall and follow-up takedowns. Dylan Layton recorded a first-period pin at 149 after a three-point takedown, and No. 21 Brock Zurawski closed his match at 197 with a 20-5 technical fall.

The sequence of majors, tech falls and a fall built a team cushion that forced George Mason to win several middle-lineup bouts to close the gap. No. 23 DJ McGee supplied a major decision at 157, Drew Dickson recorded a pin at 165 and Logan Messer — listed as No. 32 at 174 — edged Enrique Munguia 4-1 to produce a three-match run that cut into Rider’s lead.

Rider supplemented its early bonus scoring with key late contributions. Alex Esposito’s 4-2 decision at 125 included a second-period takedown that supplied the decisive margin. JP Hangey added an 11-1 major decision at 184, and Hogan Swenski finished the night at heavyweight with a 6-1 decision that included a riding-time point.

Griffin’s technical fall came after a first-period takedown and a four-point nearfall that put him in command, and the match was stopped in the second when the technical-fall threshold was reached. Zurawski built his advantage with multiple first-period takedowns and a second-period reversal before finishing with a technical fall.

George Mason’s mid-card responses narrowed the scoreboard but arrived after Rider’s run of bonus results had already supplied an insurmountable team margin. McGee’s 10-2 major decision at 157 featured a trio of three-point takedowns and a late escape that sealed the margin; Dickson’s third-period takedown preceded the pin at 165.

The victory improved Rider’s conference position, with Rider’s athletics coverage noting the team improved its Mid-American Conference record with the road win. The dual ended with Rider ahead, 30-13.

Bout-by-bout scoring and match transcripts show the takedowns, nearfalls, pins, riding-time points and penalty assessments that produced individual margins and the team total.
