The difference-maker was Purdue's #3 Joey Blaze at 165 pounds. Blaze ran up a 19-4 technical fall for five team points, supplying the kind of bonus that separated the visitors from the Mustangs down the stretch. At 184 pounds Ceasar Garza, ranked #28, upset Purdue’s #25 James Rowley 10-7 by decision, a ranked win that narrowed the gap but fell short of swinging the overall outcome.

In the end the bonus-point exchanges decided the meet. Blaze’s technical fall provided the margin Purdue needed, while Holeman’s major and Garza’s upset kept Cal Poly competitive to the final whistle.
