Iowa State built an early lead through wins by ranked starters and held off a late Missouri rally as both teams closed the regular season.
AMES, Iowa — No. 4 Iowa State defeated No. 14 Missouri 20-14 at Hilton Coliseum on Feb. 22.
Iowa State opened the dual with a string of early victories that produced a commanding team advantage through the first half of the meet. The Cyclones collected decision wins from Stevo Poulin (No. 10) at 125, Garrett Grice at 133 and No. 4 Anthony Echemendia at 141, among others, to build the margin noted in the official box score.
Poulin opened his match with a 3-point takedown and a 4-point nearfall to stake an early lead and finished with a 9-4 decision. Grice recorded takedowns in the first two periods and added a riding-time point in the third to beat No. 27 Gage Walker, 7-3. Echemendia’s early 3-point takedown at 141 held as the decisive scoring sequence in a 3-2 decision.
Missouri rallied in the back half, winning four of the final five bouts to narrow the margin. Seth Mendoza defeated No. 8 Jacob Frost, 8-2, at 149. Max Mayfield, listed at No. 16, scored a third-period 3-point takedown to upset No. 11 Connor Euton, 8-6, at 165. Cam Steed edged MJ Gaitan, 4-3, at 174 with a third-period escape and takedown, and No. 3 Aeoden Sinclair finished with a technical fall, 21-5, at 184 to add major-team points for Missouri.
Iowa State collected decisive late scores as well. No. 2 Rocky Elam defeated Evan Bates, 7-3, at 197; the official bout score lists Elam with 7 points while the match transcript entries available here show a differing total, a discrepancy flagged in the bout record. At heavyweight, No. 1 Yonger Bastida won by technical fall, 22-6, at 285.
The result leaves Missouri 12-8 overall and 5-3 in Big 12 play and Iowa State 12-2 overall and 8-1 in conference competition for the regular season finale. The dual began at 197 pounds, and Iowa State’s early run across the opening weights supplied the margin Missouri could not erase despite the late comeback.
