NC State @ Pittsburgh Recap

NC State left Pittsburgh with a 31-6 victory in Pennsylvania on Jan. 26, 2024, cruising to a 25-point dual meet win over the Panthers. The margin was built on bonus-point wrestling as the Wolfpack piled up majors and technical falls that the Panthers could not match.

NC State notched five bonus-point victories, including major decisions from Jarrett Trombley (14-4 at 125), Kai Orine (10-1 at 133) and Ed Scott (16-3 at 157). Those majors supplied crucial four-point swings that kept pressure on Pittsburgh throughout the lineup. The decisive blows came from the upper weights, where Trent Hidlay and Owen Trephan each closed matches by technical fall, both at 20-4, delivering five team points apiece and stretching the lead into insurmountable territory.

Hidlay’s and Trephan’s technical falls were the turning point; those back-to-back bonus results, combined with the earlier majors, created a scoring run that made a comeback unlikely. Pittsburgh picked up its own points in a handful of decisions, but without matching bonus production it couldn’t keep pace.

In the end the dual was decided by NC State’s ability to finish for bonus points. A collection of majors and two technical falls accounted for the bulk of the Wolfpack’s 31 points and left Pittsburgh with limited answers on Jan. 26.
