Bonus barrage pushes Lock Haven past George Mason, 27-14

A string of tech falls and a pin from the host Bald Eagles turned a close early dual into a comfortable Lock Haven win.

Lock Haven used a stretch of bonus-point results down the lineup to turn a tense early dual into a 27-14 victory over George Mason in Thomas Fieldhouse on Feb. 1.

George Mason opened strong with back-to-back wins. Ben Monn edged Curtis Nelson 11-10 at 125, and Anthony Lucchiani produced a major shock by stopping No. 32 Gable Strickland via a 17-2 technical fall at 133 to give the Patriots early momentum.

The tide swung immediately. No. 24 Wyatt Henson erased the deficit with a 21-3 technical fall at 141, and No. 29 Lucas Kapusta followed with the dual’s only pin at 149 to put Lock Haven in front. Those consecutive bonus results set the tone for the rest of the evening.

George Mason answered midline when No. 23 DJ McGee survived overtime at 157, sealing the sudden-victory decision with a takedown in the extra period. The Patriots briefly stayed within striking distance, but Lock Haven kept converting opportunities into bonus points.

Sam Gautreau closed his match at 184 by technical fall and heavyweight Kade Sottolano finished with a tech fall at 285, bookending the run that produced decisive team bonus. Tucker Hogan’s decision at 197 also helped widen the gap and preserve the margin created by the string of techs and the fall.

The result extended Lock Haven’s momentum across the season and in conference play, and left George Mason searching for answers after an up-and-down night where a strong early start couldn’t withstand the host’s bonus-point surge.
