Drexel’s bonus barrage turns a close dual into a 26-13 win over Hofstra
The Dragons turned a 13-8 deficit into a comfortable victory by racking up three bonus wins and a pin in the final four bouts.
Drexel beat Hofstra 26-13 Sunday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, with a late run of bonus-point results that flipped a tight dual into a clear team victory.
The swing began early and finished strong. No. 33 Desmond Pleasant opened the scoring with a technical fall at 125, then No. 23 Jordan Soriano followed with a decision to keep momentum on Drexel’s side. Hofstra answered in the middle weights with several decision wins to take a 13-8 lead, but Drexel closed the night with four straight victories.
Bonus points decided the dual. No. 21 Jasiah Queen produced a 14-3 major at 174, adding a key four-point margin. Transcript detail shows Queen closed the bout with a third-period takedown and riding time that sealed the gap and secured the major decision. No. 33 Ethan Wilson delivered a 28-9 technical fall at 184, and heavyweight No. 25 Nate Schon pinned his opponent at 285 to provide the six-point finish that put the dual out of reach.
Hofstra collected a pivotal individual win when Gauge Shipp scored a 14-5 major decision at 133 over Drexel’s Kyle Waterman, who entered the night ranked. That result kept the Pride competitive through the middle of the lineup, but Drexel’s sequence of a tech fall, a major, another tech fall and a pin ultimately decided the team score.
Drexel’s team report notes the Dragons erased the 13-8 deficit and closed the dual by winning the final four bouts, a stretch that produced the bonus-point cushion Hofstra couldn’t overcome. The win improved Drexel’s standing in EIWA play and continued a strong stretch for the Dragons under their current coaching staff.
For Hofstra, the dual highlighted a few bright spots in individual performances but also underscored how quickly bonus points can reshape a team result. Drexel left Philadelphia with the 26-13 victory thanks to timely major decisions, technical falls and a late pin.
