West Virginia @ Iowa State Recap

Iowa State handled West Virginia 29-11 in Ames on February 2, 2024, picking up a conference dual at Iowa State University. The Cyclones collected enough bonus points to build a comfortable margin and never trailed by much against their Big 12 foe.

A string of bonus wins made the difference for Iowa State. At 133 pounds Evan Frost rolled to a 17-1 technical fall for five team points, and at 174 MJ Gaitan closed a key gap with a fall that earned six points. Yonger Bastida capped the night with a 23-8 technical fall at heavyweight, adding another five points and helping put the dual out of reach.

West Virginia fought back in spots, most notably at 141 where Jordan Titus scored an 11-3 major decision to claim four points for the Mountaineers. Those efforts kept WV competitive on the scoreboard, but they could not match Iowa State’s bonus production.

In the end it was ISU’s ability to convert tight moments into bonus-point victories that decided the meet. The trio of tech falls and a pin provided the cushion the Cyclones needed to finish 29-11 and leave Ames with the win.
